Phootsy’s Yarn Cottage

Offers free lessons in crochet and knitting to family members of the deployed military.  These lessons can be held at the location of your choice in the Onslow County area with at least five participants.  Participants should supply their own yarn, hooks and needles.  Format can be tailored for large or small groups, coffees, church groups, Key Volunteer functions, family events or other group activity.  For more information call 910-346-6430.

The Tail Spinner

Offers knitting and crochet classes for free to any of the military spouses left behind.  The only cost would be for the supplies for the class, and which would additionally be discounted as well.

Education

University of North Carolina Wilmington

The UNCW extension program will sponsor a monthly social (dinner) at CCC for all UNCW students, to support military-affiliated students and to enable the non-military affiliated students to show their support (children will be invited to attend with their parents).  We’ll start with a potluck the first month then purchase pizza for them the second month and go from there.  Our initial and primary purpose will be to offer a networking opportunity for our military dependents.  We want to give these students the resources they will need to continue their education while their regular support systems (e.g., spouses) are deployed.

Enhanced Extended Child Care (EECC)

U.S. Marine Corps Family Child Care Program expands support for families with ENHANCED EXTENDED CHILD CARE (EECC)

This is a pilot program that is available for military families when they can not use their regularly scheduled care due to unexpected duty requirements, extended duty hours, family illness or a family emergency. Family Child Care Provider(s) aboard Camp Lejeune have been carefully selected to provide quality childcare during evenings, weekends and Federal holidays.  There is no cost to the family.  For more information about the EECC program at Camp Lejeune , 450-1500/1501

• Starting February 1st - Kids Night - Every Tuesday night, children 12 and under eats for free.  After dinner children accompanied by a parent can come into our special activities area to do a preplanned activity.  Each week materials will be provided for the parent/child team to complete a craft or activity.  Some of these activities will include making cards to send to the deployed parent.

• The third Tuesday of each month 36 parent/child teams will play bingo with a prize give away.

This Kids Night was designed with the military families in mind; however the whole community is invited to participate.  What better way to contribute to our military and giving back to the community then by bringing the two together.

 

Senior Services

If a family member of a deployed service member is caring for an elderly person and needs a break Onslow County Senior Services will care for them at the Adult Day Care Center on a day by day basis.  The elderly adult has to be 60 years of age or older.  Contact number 455-2747.
